I could never confuse the Basques with Spaniards unlike many who find it easy to call Scots, English, even though Basques are Spaniards &#8211; and Scots are not English.<\/p>\n<p>[mapsmarker layer=&#8221;49&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>I have no doubt that my alcoholism began in Lekeitio in its superb fiesta at the beginning of September. \u00a0I learned 24 hour drinking and relished it without a thought that it would change my life. They continue campaigning for them to be imprisoned in the Basque country rather than being held in jails far from their families.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These people feel that they were treated unjustly by Franco, the dictator who died in 1975. \u00a0Some distrust and dislike survives between the Basques and the central government in Madrid. \u00a0Injustices ripple on through lives and generations. \u00a0Yet we seem slow to understand that when we fight and die and inflict suffering and loss it is\u00a0<strong>always\u00a0<\/strong>about issues or property or ideals which, with time, fade into insignificance.<\/p>\n<p>A long pilgrimage opens up space in the heart and soul where resentment and grudges seem to evaporate leaving only compassion and love which unite rather than divide. Injustice and suffering are part of a much bigger process in life. \u00a0On the long Caminos, so much falls away as unimportant. They have a maturity which is perhaps a reflection of the special autonomy granted to the region when democracy came to Spain. \u00a0They are doing well.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>A busy Camino.<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Returning in July to this Camino, I found that the number of pilgrims had doubled and increased every day. \u00a0There is plenty of private accommodation soaking up the overspill from the public albergues which fill up early in the afternoon. \u00a0Many joined the Camino in Bilbao which, today, is a beautiful city.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5515\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/P1130218.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5515\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5515\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/P1130218.jpg\" alt=\"Riverside Bilbao.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/P1130218.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/P1130218-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5515\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Riverside Bilbao.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I skipped around the city, choosing instead the industrial route past the airport which was a few kilometres shorter. The ratio of loos to people worsened until, on my final day, in Lui\u00f1a, we had two toilets for seventy of us.
