Quintanarraya, Ruta de La Lana\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/P10000771.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/P10000771-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5445\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Simple lodging, no heating or hot water, but \u00a0welcome on a very wet day.<br \/>Quintanarraya, Ruta de La Lana<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This year, 2015, I have started two Caminos and in neither did I make it as far as I had intended. \u00a0It was not my arthritic ankle which stopped me but my moderately benign heart arrhythmia quite common in men of my age. \u00a0Often my average speed drops to 1 km per hour because I need to stop and wait for my heart to calm down.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5432\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/P1110340.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5432\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5432\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/P1110340.jpg\" alt=\"A challenging descent to Antequera, CAmino Mozarabe from Malaga.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/P1110340.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/P1110340-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5432\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A challenging descent to Antequera, Camino Mozarabe from Malaga.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On returning from a 10 day walk from Seville to Zafra, on the Via de La Plata, my doctor said that the only solution is to exert myself much less. \u00a0Caminos do not seem too much exertion to me, but my heart obviously feels it is. \u00a0So I have been faced with accepting that my lifestyle must adjust to this reality.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>The Camino is our teacher.<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>What I have learned is that fundamental, paradigm shifts in perspective come more frequently with age. \u00a0My experiences of five years walking Caminos is that personal change is not to be avoided but embraced and welcomed. \u00a0So I am sure that whether I walk more slowly and much shorter distances, or not walk Caminos at all, \u00a0the pilgrimage will continue. \u00a0Some day I will no longer be able to walk it: I will let it go.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5433\" style=\"width: 927px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/P1110864.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5433\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5433\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/P1110864.jpg\" alt=\"New directions.\" width=\"917\" height=\"755\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/P1110864.jpg 917w, https:\/\/the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/P1110864-300x247.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 917px) 100vw, 917px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5433\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New directions.<\/p><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Learning from Simplicity<\/strong>.<\/h2>\n<p>I am sure that the necessary simplicity of life on the Camino has helped me to learn to &#8220;let go.&#8221; \u00a0 Pilgrims let go of keeping up appearances, they ditch the surplus attire or accessories they set out with, they let go of privacy and luxury and all will say how good it is to live more simply, at least for a while. Moreover, a long pilgrimage on foot exposes many hidden, inner treasures; usually when bits of the ego get worn away like the soles of our shoes. \u00a0Walking, contemplation, prayer, space and silence strip us bare and we find we are just fine, naked. \u00a0At least, so it seems to me. \u00a0This is the secret of wealth, openly declared by the world&#8217;s great spiritual traditions: walk in the direction of material wealth and you have a serious risk of living in financial insecurity no matter how much you acquire.
