Also there are routes for all seasons.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5679\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/eroski.jpg\" alt=\"eroski\" width=\"680\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/eroski.jpg 680w, https:\/\/the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/eroski-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/caminodesantiago.consumer.es\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Eroski Camino site<\/a>\u00a0gives a great overview of the routes and up to date information and comments on the albergues (Hostels).<\/p>\n<h1><a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Raft of Corks<\/a><\/h1>\n<p>This site, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Raft of Corks<\/a>, has posts about a spiritual journey on these Caminos which began in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Just right now I am wondering about my Camino for 2016. I saw that there is a Camino in the Canaries, on Gran Canaria, and went there last week to find out a bit more about this path.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5702\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5702\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5702\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/4-P1150617.jpg\" alt=\"4-P1150617\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/4-P1150617.jpg 600w, https:\/\/the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/4-P1150617-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Camino starts in the village of Galdar in the North of Gran Canaria and ends in Playa Ingl\u00e9s in the South<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Galdar, where this 70km Camino begins, has a Parish Church dedicated to Santiago. When I looked at the mountains I feared that the route would be too difficult for me so I didn&#8217;t attempt it and instead mused about the caption beneath a statue of a local dignitary, obviously not short of either bread or pasta, quoting him as saying, &#8220;We will build this Church even if we have to beg for our food.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5703\" style=\"width: 654px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5703\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5703\" src=\"http:\/\/www.the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/1-P1150619.jpg\" alt=\"Pre Liberation Theology.\" width=\"644\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/1-P1150619.jpg 644w, https:\/\/the-raft-of-corks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/1-P1150619-242x300.jpg 242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5703\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pre Liberation Theology. \u00a0That red cross in the background is a Santiago Cross, the cross of the Knights Templar who protected pilgrims in the middle ages.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The church itself is a smaller version of the Cathedral of Santa Ana in Las Palmas and both look to me a bit like Socialist Realism on the outside. In the end I managed much more than I expected in Gran Canaria, climbing the final 800m up to Roque Nublo, one of its highest points without too much trouble. \u00a0Gran Canaria is an excellent winter training spot to prepare for the Camino althogh it lacks an infrastructure of accomodation for hikers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Which Camino to choose?
